The Columbus Wildcats came up short in a pair of basketball battles during this year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout. The Columbus girls fell to Danville 60-18 Saturday at Southeastern Community College in Burlington. After trailing 22-10 in the first quarter, Columbus saw their deficit climb to 30 points by halftime, which would be more than enough for Danville to win by.
Junior Aracely Garza and sophomore Isabel Rendon scored five points each to lead the Wildcats, with Rendon adding five rebounds and two assists, but Columbus still falls to 14-6.
The Wildcat boys also suffered defeat Friday night, falling 57-46 at New London. An 20-8 deficit after a quarter of play put Columbus in a hole that they could never fully climb out of. The Wildcats drop to 4-15 and are back in action later tonight against Louisa-Muscatine.
The Lone Tree Lions also could not earn a win in the Super Conference Shootout. The Lone Tree boys fell 67-65 against Van Buren County Friday to drop to 6-14 this season, while the Lion girls were beaten 50-26 Saturday by Holy Trinity Catholic to fall to 18-3. The Lone Tree boys will next play tomorrow night against Winfield-Mount Union.
