The high school boys’ wrestling postseason is upon us, and the Washington Demons are hoping that they will be bringing their whole team to the state tournament in Des Moines by getting through this year’s Class 2A district tournament tomorrow in Williamsburg.
Washington sent four wrestlers to state last season, and three are back and looking for more this year. That includes junior Aaron Boone, who is 43-1 and has been ranked top-five in the state most of the season at 132 pounds.
Boone is coming off his fifth tournament championship after winning the WACO Warrior Invitational last weekend and will be looking to follow up last year’s district title at 120 lbs and a sixth-place finish at state.
Chase Greiner is looking close his Demon career with another trip to Wells Fargo Arena. The senior is 37-6 at 157 lbs and won his second tournament of the season at WACO, and now Greiner will try to build on his runner-up finish at 160 during districts last year.
Younger brother Caden Greiner is hunting a second straight trip to state as well, having gone 35-8 at 138 as a sophomore and trying to earn the district title he fell one win short of last year at 120.
A number of Washington wrestlers will try to push their way past the eight-team field in Williamsburg and punch their ticket to state for the first time. 113-lbs junior Nate Edmonds has put together a solid season by going 23-18, while Greyson Hartman is just shy of 30 wins at 285 in his first year.
Fellow Demon freshmen Joseph Schreiber and Blaine Rees also have compiled 20 victories this season, while veterans like senior Lane Schrock; sophomore Rudy Wolfe; and juniors Bryer Billingsly and Braylon Hamilton will look to cap their season with reservations in Des Moines.
Wrestlers who finish top two in their weight classes will advance to state from Class 2A districts, which will begin tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.
