The playoffs begin for area boys basketball teams this week, and KCII has you covered for Winfield-Mt. Union. One of the top teams in the region and the state, the fifth-ranked Wolves host New London tonight in the first round of the district bracket.

Winfield-Mt. Union wrapped up its regular season last week with a 63-38 win over Lone Tree and a Super Conference North Championship. A 19-2 third-quarter propelled the Wolves to the win as they got 31 points from Cam Buffington. Abram Edwards notched another double-double with 13 points and 14 boards. WMU heads to the postseason averaging just over 63 points per game and allowing 33. Shooting 49% from the floor, 31% from deep, and 52% from the stripe, they’re also good for 33 rebounds, 20 assists, 11 steals, four blocks and nine turnovers per game. Individually, Buffington and Edwards are each averaging double-doubles.  

New London Comes to town having already won a postseason game, taking the play-in versus Columbus 65-52 on Friday. With a 5-17 overall record, the Tigers are scoring 47 points per contest and giving up 65. They are hitting 36% of their shots from the field, 28% from three, and 55% from the free throw line. New London gets 26 rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and 14 turnovers per night. Brendan Richey and London Franklin lead the way for the Tigers, each averaging double figures. These two teams met in the playoffs last year, with New London eliminating the Wolves 58-52 in the Substate semifinal. Winfield-Mt. Union has lost four straight to the Tigers since 2017.
