Four local wrestlers have earned their spot at this year’s Class 1A state wrestling tournament after qualifying from districts Saturday. The WACO Warriors will again send a pair of juniors to state after Gage Samo and Louden Huisenga earned return trips to Des Moines.
Husienga continued his undefeated season by winning a 1A District 12 championship Saturday in Wilton. Huisenga, now 34-0 this season, won a 6-2 decision in the semifinals at 190 pounds before claiming an 8-4 decision in the championship bout and winning a second straight district title.
Samo pinned the first opponent he wrestled at 113 lbs in Wilton and won a 7-0 decision in the semis. Despite losing a slim 2-1 decision in the finals, Samo took second place by no-contest to get back to state and raised his record this season to 32-7.
The Highland Huskies will also be represented at state by Luke Guseman, who brought home the district crown from Wilton at 120 lbs. Guseman needed overtime to survive in the semifinals, but he would get a 6-4 sudden victory to advance before claiming a 12-6 decision in the title bout to improve to 16-5.
One of the Lone Tree Lions’ young wrestlers is also headed to state, as freshman Brock Nebergall was the runner-up at 113 lbs Saturday at the 1A District 8 tournament in Pleasantville.
Nebergall won by fall in the semifinals and bounced back from being pinned in the finals, needing only 52 seconds to pin his opponent in wrestlebacks and punch his ticket to state.
He’ll join Guseman, Samo and Huisenga at this year’s Class 1A state championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, which will begin Wednesday morning. Be on the lookout for updates from state wrestling all week long on KCII and online at KCIIradio.com.
