The Washington Demons had their girls’ basketball season come to an end Saturday night with a 39-28 loss to Davis County in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinals. Washington was able to start strong by using a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take an 11-8 lead, but being unable to hit a shot from the field in the second period would result in the Demons trailing 20-16 at halftime.

Washington hung tough all night, but a three-pointer by Laynee Moore sparked a 10-2 run from Davis County to close out the game. Despite the loss, Demons head coach Shannon Rugg had nothing but praise for his team after the game with KCII Sports.

“Defensively, I thought we did everything we possibly could to slow them down,” Rugg said. “Our effort was there [and] it’s been there all year long. I simply asked all the seniors if they’re proud of their effort, and they said yes, and [if] you’re proud of your teammates’ effort, and they’re like ‘yes,’ so hats off to Davis County, they just beat us, and I’m super proud of this group of kids because we just come out and battle.”

Junior Kendall Hinrichsen scored nine points to lead Washington, which ends the season with a record of 8-13. The Demons will be losing five seniors from this year’s roster, including Jacey Berg, Taylor Bartholomew, Maci Williams, Aliyah Jara and Sadie Van Der Molen.
