Local girls’ basketball teams will be looking keep up their winning ways when they take part in Class 1A regional quarterfinals as the high school playoffs roll on tonight.

That includes the Sigourney Savages, who are traveling to face Melcher-Dallas in the Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals this evening. Sigourney has ripped off 12 straight wins to improve to 18-4, including winning a South Iowa Cedar League East championship and beating Pekin 70-37 Thursday night in the first round of the postseason.

Senior point guard Carly Goodwin has been the leader of the pack for the Savages, averaging nearly 13-and-a-half points, four-and-a-half rebounds, four assists and two-and-a-half steals per game.

Junior forward Josephine Moore has also been a problem for opponents in the paint, putting up nearly 12 points and nine rebounds a game. Sigourney will be trying to knock off a Melcher-Dallas team that is 18-3 and, just like the Savages, has not lost since the calendar turned to 2024.

The WACO Warriors will also be looking to move onto the semifinals when they face Montezuma in Class 1A Region 8. WACO is 13-9 but has won seven of their last eight, thanks in part to Brenna Graber, who is averaging over 12 points over the last seven games,

The freshman has created quite the tandem with senior forward Emma Wagler, who has averaged almost 13 points and 12 rebounds per contest in an all-conference-caliber season. After beating Hillcrest Academy in the first round 44-32, the Warriors will be looking to muscle past a Montezuma squad that is 17-4.

The Columbus Wildcats will be looking for their first playoff victory in eight years when they host West Burlington in Class 2A Region 6. Columbus finished a regular season with a winning record for the first time since 2017 by going 14-6, with junior point guard Ariana Vergara leading the charge by averaging nearly 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game.

The Wildcats will be welcoming a West Burlington team to town that has just two wins this season. All Class 1A and 2A regional quarterfinal games are slated to tip-off tonight at 7 o’clock.
