In what they hope will be a lengthy playoff run, Winfield-Mt. Union boys basketball got off to a good start last night, knocking off New London 70-37.

A zone defense from the Tigers limited the scoring chances for Winfield early, but they still commanded the first quarter 16-9. Attacking the offensive glass with authority all night long, extended possessions for the Wolves allowed them to grow their lead at the break to 17. Jake Edwards, who made a trio of three-pointers in the first half, buried three more in the third on his way to a game-high 22. Cam Buffington had 13 of his 19 by halftime, while another consistent outing from Abram Edwards saw the senior finish with 16. WMU had the running clock rule in effect by the final frame as they improved to 17-2 overall.

While the offense hit shots inside and out, the Wolves’ defense made New London work for every point they got. Brendan Richey and London Franklin, the team’s leading scorers entering Tuesday, combined for just 10. Brigham Porter was the pace-setter for the Tigers last night with 13, as they end their season at 5-18.

Onto the second round of District action, Winfield-Mt. Union hosts Danville on Thursday.
