Playoff basketball returns to Winfield tonight when the WMU boys welcome Danville in the 1A District 9 semifinals.
The Wolves earned the right to host another game after handling New London 70-37 in their posteason opener Monday night. Jake Edwards knocked down six three-pointers and led the way with 22, while Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards continued to make double-doubles look routine. The average margin of victory for the Wolves has been nearly 30 thanks to 48% shooting from the floor, 31% from three, and 53.2% at the line. More than 19 assists per game has WMU as one of the State’s best in that mark. They also get 33 rebounds, 11 steals, and four blocks per game.
They square off with a battle-tested Danville team that finished fourth in a highly contested Super Conference South. The Bears have won five in a row, including a 62-52 playoff opener over Sigourney. Danville had three starters finish with double-figures, highlighted by Carson Ourth’s 24. His 13.5 points per game trails only Titus Svoboda who leads the team with 15.5. As a team, the Bears average 60 points a night while allowing 45. An offense that is hitting nearly 50% of its shots is complemented by a defense that had the fourth-most steals and ninth-most blocks in 1A basketball. Winfield-Mt. Union is seeking revenge, as tonight mirrors a district semifinal between these programs two years ago. Danville took that contest 44-41, ending the Wolves’ season.
