The Iowa Grizzlies are an Adaptive Sports Iowa wheelchair basketball team. This Saturday and Sunday, the Grizzlies will host nearly a dozen teams from the Midwest in the Northern Conference Tournament at GreenState Family Field House in Coralville.
Teams will play in a round robin format on Saturday, followed by bracket-style on Sunday. The Grizzlies, who are Iowa’s only youth wheelchair basketball team, are slated to play at 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Representing Washington County on the Grizzlies are Mid-Prairie junior Jayden Stafford and Washington sophomore Josh Anderson. KCII spoke with Stafford to get his thoughts on being a part of the team. “It’s a big honor to get to show the public and the people we go to school with [that] this is a sport we want to compete in and the sport we want to be the best at and hopefully represent our country one day.”
Admission to watch the tournament is free, however there will be raffle drawings for various prizes that serve as a fundraiser for the Grizzlies. Tournament t-shirts will be sold on-site as well. For more information on the tournament, the Iowa Grizzlies, or Adaptive Sports Iowa, click here.
