Two local girls’ basketball teams had their seasons end with losses Friday night, as the Sigourney Savages were beaten 76-35 by Martensdale-St Marys in the Class 1A Region 3 semifinals and the Columbus Wildcats fell to North Mahaska 61-22 in the Class 2A Region 6 semis.
A 24-8 deficit for Sigourney in the first quarter would be too much to overcome, as Martensdale-St Marys stretched the advantage to 20 points by halftime and never looked back. The Savages end the season with a record of 19-5 and will be losing five seniors off this season’s roster in Erin Dawson, Olivia Hammes, Amiya Smallwood, Carly Goodwin and Ava Fineran.
Columbus trailed 18-6 in the first quarter and could never recover, trailing by 24 points at halftime and by 32 at the end of the third period. Junior guard Ariana Vergara led the Wildcats with eight points scored, but the season still ends for Columbus with a mark of 15-7.
