At their Tuesday meeting, the Washington City Council accepted the resignation of Mayor Jaron Rosien. Mayor Pro-Tem Millie Youngquist read from the letter Rosien submitted to council, “Mayor Pro-Tem Youngquist, I have struggled immensely with this decision. I ran for office to better our community, and I keep returning to what is best for the City of Washington. Ultimately, continuing on with a leave of absence slows progress. It was a great honor to work with so many wonderful individuals and organizations over the last ten years to accomplish huge things. With reluctance, I tender my resignation effective March 1st, 2024. Yours sincerely, Mayor Jaron P. Rosien”  The council voted unanimously to accept the resignation. A special election was approved by the Council to fill the vacant position, to be held on April 30th if the County Auditor’s Office approves the date. If the April date is not approved, then the Special Election will be pushed to July. Iowa law requires a 46-day notice to the county auditor before holding a city election, but not within a week of pre-established election dates, like the general election in November.
