The Columbus Wildcats are coming off a breakthrough season in girls’ basketball, putting up their first winning record in seven years and finishing second in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. As proof of their success, all five of their starters have received all-conference selections.
That includes junior Lily Coil making first-team All-Super Conference North. Despite missing the final few games of the season, Coil was still a dominant all-around player, averaging nearly 15 points, 10-and-a-half rebounds, three assists, five-and-a-half steals and one blocked shot per game.
Fellow junior Ariana Vergara also is a first-team choice after leading Columbus in scoring, part of a season where she put up 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and four steals per contest. Junior forward Aracely Garza averaged almost 6.5 points, seven boards and 2.5 steals a game on her way to a second-team selection.
Honorable mentions go to junior Frannie Sosa and sophomore Isabel Rendon, while head coach Kasey Keltner is also selected as the Super Conference North Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to a 15-7 season.
