With a 20-2 overall record, the fifth-ranked Wolves earned the trip to Des Moines by defeating Holy Trinity Catholic in the Substate finals last Saturday. The Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Champs saw six All-Conference selections including Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards voted to the first team, Jake Edwards and Carter Loyd on the second team, and Gabe Hemsworth and Cole Milks as honorable mention. Buffington was also named Player of the Year in the conference, while Klay Edwards was selected as Coach of the Year. Winfield-Mt. Union will face seventh-ranked Lynnville-Sully in Monday’s Quarterfinal matchup.
Winfield-Mt. Union Schools will not have class on Monday, March 4, as much of the community plans to attend the contest. A Pep Bus to help students make the trip has been acquired thanks to donations from an anonymous, retired teacher, anonymous alumni, and Kim Fenton. In addition to a pep rally that will be held on Friday, community members will form a send-off for the team on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Locust Street to Highway 218.
When the game finally tips off, you can listen to the action on all KCII signals and streams. Coverage begins Monday with the WMU State Basketball Pregame Show at 11:45 a.m. and opening tip between the Wolves and Hawks at 12:15 p.m. live from Des Moines.
