The State of Iowa is one of six in the nation with areas of extreme drought, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center. Record-breaking temperatures in the last week did little to alleviate these conditions, which can be seen in parts of the KCII listening area.
The areas of extreme drought, the second-highest rating on the intensity scale, are in a majority of Johnson County, 44 percent of Iowa County, and three percent in northeast Washington County. Severe drought, one level below extreme, is present in parts of Washington, Keokuk, Johnson and Iowa counties. Henry, Jefferson, and Louisa counties, meanwhile, have been classified at moderate drought or better.
If these conditions persist, it could pose a challenge for the upcoming planting season. To view the drought outlook in your county, or the rest of the state, click here.
