A new season of track and field is underway for the Washington Demons, which includes their third indoor event of the season already taking place later today at Wartburg College in Waverly.
The Washington boys are bringing back 10 athletes who qualified for the Class 3A state championships last season. Part of that group is sophomore Josh Anderson, who had a brilliant freshman season where he set records in wheelchair races on his way to winning three medals at state, including taking second in the 100 meters; third in the 800; and fourth in both the 200 and 400.
Junior Logan McDole is back after winning a district championship in the 800-meter run, while Alec Ulin is also back after making it to state in the 400 meters and fellow senior Micah Rees returns looking for a duplication of his trip to state for both the 1,600 and 3,200.
A number of athletes who ran on relay teams that made it to state for the Demon boys are also back, including seniors Seth Shepherd and Kael Malichky; juniors Dirk Rothe and Tyler Alderton; and sophomores Andrew Rees and Sawyer Tschantz.
The Washington girls have seven members of their state roster back this season, including Iris Dahl, who had top district finishes in the 800 and 1,500 and helped run the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800-meter relays.
Fellow sophomore Leighton Messinger made state in the 100-meter hurdles in her debut season, while relay runners like sophomores Eden Levetzow and Taylor Miksch; and juniors Lauren Horak, Kendall Hinrichsen and Taylor Moore are back and looking for even more success.
New faces like freshman Jaedyn Moore have already made a strong impact for the Demons at the Dickinson Relays and IATC Indoor Championships. Washington will compete at the Wartburg High School Invitational starting this afternoon.
