The Washington Demon track and field team put together a strong showing at the annual Wartburg High School Invitational last night, with nine individual top-10 finishes at Wartburg College in Waverly powering the girls’ team to a 10th-place finish in team scoring and the boys to 16th.
A relay had the best overall finish for Washington, as the team of Ada Kendall, Leighton Messinger, Eden Levetzow and Jaedyn Moore was third in the girls’ 4-by-200-meters.
Taylor Bartholomew, Alyvia Anderson, Isabella Lujan and Amelia Dahl also combined to take ninth in the 4-by-800, while Dirk Roth, Kael Malichky, Seth Shepherd and Jace Sanders were twelfth in the 4-by-800 for the Demon boys.
Individually, the best finish for the Washington girls belonged to Kendall, who was sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.37 seconds. Fellow senior Abigail Kleese was seventh in the 400 meters in just under one minute nine seconds, as was the sophomore Messinger in the high jump by clearing four-and-a-half feet; and freshman Ellie Van Der Molen, who finished the 3,000 meters in just beyond 13-and-a-half minutes.
Anderson took ninth in the 1,500 in just under six minutes, while fellow junior Lujan was 12th in that race. The freshman Moore had the same place in the long jump, as did sophomore Taylor Miksch in the 400.
The Demons also got an 11th-place finish from sophomore Addison Miller in the high jump, while sophomore Ryen Pepper was 12th in the preliminary stages of the 55-meter hurdles.
Two Washington boys were tied for the team’s best individual finish. Senior Alec Ulin was sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.25 seconds, while junior Logan McDole also finished sixth in the 400 in 56.41 seconds.
Freshman Greyson Hartman ended up seventh in the shot put with a top toss of 41-and-a-half feet, while the junior Alderton was 10th in the 1,600 in just over five minutes and was followed five places later by the senior Malichky.
Roth finished 14th in the 400 for the Demons, as did fellow junior Keider Gomez-Valdez in the 55-meter prelims. The Washington boys also finished 18th in the 4-by-200 relay thanks to Blaine Rees, Nic Stone, Grant Whisler and Aiden Schmitz.
