A new season of track and field is underway for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves, with a number of the athletes that represented WMU at the state meet back on the roster in 2024.

That group includes Cam Buffington, who will be the defending Class 1A state champion in the long jump. Buffington also won a Southeast Iowa Super Conference title in the long jump and made state in the 100-meter dash.

Buffington was also part of a 4-by-100-meter relay that reached state, with relay teammates Abram Edwards and Eli Miller returning for their senior seasons. Junior Kohlby Newsom returns for Winfield-Mount Union after making state in the 800-meter run and will likely rejoin Edwards, senior Ty Scorpil and junior Lane Genkinger on a distance medley relay that made it to Des Moines.

Junior Sheaden Adams will join Newsom, Scorpil and senior Gabe Hemsworth as returners from a state-bound 4-by-400 relay, while Hemsworth, Edwards and Buffington will be looking for another trip to state in the sprint medley. Hemsworth will also be eyeing a repeat of his state medal in the 400-meter hurdles.

The WMU girls will have back half of one of the fastest shuttle hurdles team in the state with the return of senior Tessa Huston and junior Jose Nelson. The Wolves have already competed in a handful of indoor events and will make their debut on an outdoor track Monday at Danville.
