The Washington City Council heard the 2023 Washington Police Department annual report at their Tuesday meeting. The report, given by Washington Police Chief Jim Lester, included the Officer of the Year Award, “Our Officer of the year this year is Lieutenant Shamus Altenhofen, he’s been the go to person as far as what do we need what can we do, scheduling he is constantly receiving phone calls from officers needing time off. He’s there to support them, often times rather than calling someone to cover the schedule, he’ll just take the schedule himself.”  Lieutenant Shamus Altenhofen has served with the Washington Police Department since May 2010 and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in December 2010. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in July 2020. He is the department’s rifle armorer and has instructor certifications in firearms and CIT (Crisis Intervention Training).
