A new season of golf is about to begin at Winfield-Mount Union, and there is plenty of excitement about the players that will tee it up this spring for the Wolves.
Among that group is senior Carter Loyd, who is coming off a season where he just missed out on a trip to the Class 1A boys’ state tournament when he finished third at districts by shooting a six-over-par 78. Loyd was coming off a 17-over 89 at sectionals that earned him a tie for sixth place, three-and-a-half shots above his 18-hole average.
Junior Jake Edwards and sophomore Nic Sparrow will also be back for WMU after shooting nine-hole averages of just over 49 strokes, while junior Sinjin Brown and sophomores Max Edwards and Konner Kinneberg will look to build on their average scores in the mid-50s.
For the Winfield-Mount Union girls, senior Lily Freeman is back after leading the team in nine-hole scoring and will try to help the Wolves get back to the regional finals as a team.
The WMU girls are slated to have their first meet of the season April 8th against Wapello, while the boys will tee off the new golf season four days prior against Columbus.
