The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls golf team started the season strong Monday night, blasting Iowa City Regina in a River Valley Conference dual. The Hawks posted a score of 189, while Regina did not have enough players to field a team score. The Golden Hawks swept the hardware, led by meet medalist Gabi Robertson and her 42, along with medalist runner-up Madi Davidson’s 45. Addison English made it a trio in the 40s with a 49. Other scores included Elliot Debler at 53, Olivia Swartzentruber 55 and Madison Witthoft 61. This week, Golden Hawk head coach Tracy McArtor talked about his team’s play in their opener. McArtor said, “Madi (Davidson), Gabi (Robertson) and Addison (English) kept the ball in play all night. Madi’s 45 did come with a ball out of bounds. She and the others have learned to fix things on the fly with their swing, that’s how you know they have invested a lot of time in their game. They fight through adversity. If they have a bad hole, they let that go and move on to the next hole and the next shot. For Elliot (Debler), I look for her to bounce right back. It wouldn’t surprise me next time out to have her shoot something in the mid 40s. Olivia (Swartzentruber), she’s one of my freshmen. First meet ever for her. She has potential as well to shoot a sub-50 round. Madison (Witthoft) is one of our four seniors. She didn’t get a lot of time on the varsity squad last year, but she’ll be in the mix for that sixth slot. She just needs to gain the experience.”

The Hawks are now 1-0 on the season and will be back on the course Monday when they host West Branch.
