So far there have been few testing the bite in southeast Iowa’s lakes and ponds according to the latest Fishing Report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Still, there are plenty of opportunities for anglers, especially with warmer temperatures on the horizon.

The best activity is in Henry County’s East Lake Park Pond, which was recently stocked with trout. Bite conditions are good with a worm and bobber or a little jig, but a valid fishing license and paid trout fee are required to fish for or possess trout.

In Washington County, Lake Darling’s water temperature is around 44 degrees. The largemouth bass bite is fair, and they can be found along the base of the rocks on the north side of the lake. Jigs and soft plastics that mimic crawdads are recommended.

Lake Belva Deer in Keokuk County is seeing slower conditions for both black crappie and bass. For crappies, slowly drift a slip bobber and minnow along the edge of the trees near the north boat ramp. The bass bite can be tested along the north side with soft plastics or jigs, particularly where the sun hits the water.
