It’s a battle of two KCII area teams tonight at the Washington Wellness Park when the Washington Demon boys soccer team entertains Hillcrest Academy. The Demons started the season fast, rolling through Highland in their opener last week, 5-0, behind a hat trick and an assist from Manny Raymundo, a goal and an assist for Angel Mata, a goal from Edwin Cortes and a five save clean sheet for Braedon Tappan. History could be made tonight for the Demons against Hillcrest, with Raymundo now tied with Zac Stout for the all-time program lead with 33 goals.
Hillcrest opens the season tonight. The Ravens were 4-7 a year ago, 3-5 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference with a rough ending to the season, dropping five straight matches after starting 4-2. The Ravens will have to replace leading scorer Grant Bender, who graduated after scoring six goals last year, but do bring back a trio, Phoenix Anderson, Seth Ours and Owen Scott who all had a trio of goals of their own a season ago. Scott was the team leader with 18 shots on goal. Top assister Rowan Miller is back with his three helpers. Kyle Neuschwander also returns in goal after serving 868 minutes on the back line with 39 saves and a 65% save percentage.
The Demons have won the last two matches in the series, including a 5-1 victory last season, where Hillcrest led at the break on an Anderson goal, before Washington roared to life with five tallies after half including two from Raymundo, two from Lane Schrock and one from Cortes. Action gets underway tonight at 4:30 in Washington.
