The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team got back to their winning ways Thursday night with a 3-1 victory in Wellman over visiting Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union. The Golden Hawks turned to senior Beau Flynn to supply the offense and the upperclassman delivered a hat trick. He gave Mid-Prairie a 1-0 lead on a beautiful header goal late in the first half, and that’s where the score stood at the break. The tally was so nice, Flynn did it twice, beating the Wildcat keeper with a second header on a set-piece corner to double the Mid-Prairie advantage to 2-0 early in the second half. He completed his first career hat trick with a penalty kick goal later in the second frame to drive the lead to 3-0. After the match, Flynn joined KCII Sports to talk about his big night. Flynn said, “We really just kept possession and focused on switching fields. We made sure we got the best shots we can and put pressure on the goalie, put him in a hard position and try to get the goal in the back of the net. On both goals, I knew we had someone good kicking the corners in. I knew it was going to come to me and I was ready to go. The second one I liked a little better because it had a little more redirection on it. Those don’t happen often. When you get lucky like that it really feels good. (In a penalty kick) You just look right at the goalie and see what he’s thinking. This was a great win, scoring some goals. We haven’t scored much all season but it was good to see the ball go in the net. Hopefully we can keep it rolling!”
The Wildcats got on the board in the final five minutes of the match with a breakaway goal from Fernando Erazo. With the win, the Hawks are now 2-2 on the year with a trip to Monticello Tuesday. Columbus is 0-2 and faces Highland Monday.
