The Washington County Board of Supervisors held a Public Hearing on the proposed Tax Levy for the fiscal year from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, on Tuesday. Statements from the public ranged from comparisons to neighboring counties taxes, to needing to cut the budget down in general. Supervisor Jack Seward Jr. shared information on where to find all Iowa tax information for citizens to investigate, “We’ve heard several comments about comparing Washington County to Johnson County and Van Buren County, if they wanted to find our information about those counties, and where to make a direct comparison, where do they go to find that information? The Iowa Department of Management, there is a public site to view any counties, any taxing authority in the state.” This was the first public hearing on the proposed tax levy. Reasons for the levy include: Funding for multiple projects (E911 tower, road improvements, phone/security upgrades, building renovations, and computer equipment), and the need for additional money to continue programs that substantially benefit county residents.
