Thursday was a productive day for Winfield-Mount Union track and field, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams competing at the Falcon Co-Ed Relays in West Burlington.

WMU had two individual winners on the boys’ side. Cam Buffington began his defense of his Class 1A state title in the long jump by winning the event at West Burlington with a top leap of 21 feet one inch. Fellow senior Gabe Hemsworth was the 400-meter hurdles champion for the Wolves after posting a time of 56.71 seconds, while Cole Milks also took part in the long jump and finished third.

Buffington and Hemsworth ran with senior Abram Edwards and junior Kohlby Newsom on the winning team in the distance medley relay, clocking in at three minutes 43 seconds. Newsom took second place in the 800 meters, as did fellow juniors Sheaden Adams and Jake Edwards in the 200 and the high jump, respectively.

Junior Cooper Buffington was third in the shot put toss and fourth in the discus throw for Winfield-Mount Union, while senior Kael Johnson finished fifth in the shot put. Sophomore Bowen Thomson was also fifth in the 3,200 meters, as was senior Ty Scorpil in the 110 hurdles.

WMU also had a runner-up finish in the boys’ 4-by-400-meter relay, while the Wolves were fourth in the 4-by-100 and third in both the 4-by-800 and the sprint medley.

The Winfield-Mount Union girls were led by three individual winners. Sophomore Quin Smith cleared four-and-a-half feet to take the title in the high jump, while junior Josie Nelson was the champion in the 100-meter hurdles by crossing the finish line in 17.7 seconds.

Senior Tessa Huston won the 400 hurdles in one minute 14 seconds, and Huston and Nelson joined senior Aurey Meeker and freshman Suttyn Schlee to win the shuttle hurdles relay for the Wolves in 1:16. WMU was also third in the sprint medley and fifth in the distance medley.
