The Washington Demons earned their first victory of the girls’ soccer season Friday by defeating Central Lee 3-2. Senior Audrey Anderson buried a penalty kick to give Washington the initial lead but Central Lee tied the match up in the 15th minute.

In the 32nd minute, senior Giselle Marcelino would find a loose ball and drop it back to the top of the goal box to Angie Anderson, which the sophomore would put into the back of the net to give the Demons a 2-1 lead they would take into halftime.

The Hawks would have a response and tie the game three minutes into the second half, but Marcelino would find a through-ball and score it to put Washington back in front.

Big saves in one-on-one matchups down the stretch from sophomore goalkeeper Aleigha Medley would make the Marcelino strike in the 46th minute stand up, including fielding a free kick that came soaring into the box with no time left.

Medley’s nine saves were a huge reason that, after three losses that were each by a 1-0 score, Washington has its first win of 2024. The Demons will look for their first Southeast Conference victory of the season later today when they travel to Mount Pleasant.
