It took a second-half comeback, but the Washington Demons continued their unbeaten start to the boys’ soccer season by knocking off Mount Pleasant 3-2 last night. Washington fell behind by halftime after conceding goals to Mount Pleasant in the 27th and 33rd minutes.

But the Demons had a response ready right away. Four minutes into the second half, a deflected ball by the Panther goalkeeper after a cross into the goal box by senior Angel Mata led to sophomore Edwin Cortes scoring his fourth goal of the season and getting Washington on the board.

The Demons would tie the match at 2 in the 55th minute when Brayan Arreola navigated his way to the top of the box and knocked in a strike for the second goal of his senior season. The go-ahead score came five minutes later, as Mata fed junior Lucky Lindsey for his first career goal and what would prove to be the winning margin.

After the match, Washington head coach Sally Hart told KCII Sports that the Demons got to 3-0 because her team simply willed themselves to a rally in the final 40 minutes.

“At the end of the game, I asked the guys what [it took] to win that game,” Hart said, “and they kept saying, ‘We decided to do this’ or ‘We stepped it up.’ It was that ‘we.’ It was a team effort, and they all played their part.”

The Washington girls were not as fortunate, suffering a 2-0 loss to Mount Pleasant. Allowing a goal in each half on the road and not having an answer would result in the Demons’ record dropping to 1-4. Both Washington soccer teams will be back in action Thursday against Fairfield.
