With colder than normal temperatures, rain, and some snow, Iowa farmers were left with 2.8 days suitable for fieldwork last week, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. For the second week in a row, fieldwork included applying anhydrous, manure, and dry fertilizer. High winds prevented some producers from spraying fertilizer.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 14 percent very short, 35 percent short, 47 percent adequate, and four percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 26 percent very short, 38 percent short, 34 percent adequate, and two percent surplus.
Oats seeding reached 32 percent complete, six days ahead of last year and one week ahead of the five-year average. Oat emergence reached four percent . Cattle producers continue to wait for pastures to green up before turning out their animals. Calving is in full swing with reports of mud in some areas.
