Two local boys golf teams took on a talented field Tuesday at the 18-hole Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk Invitational Tournament at the Kalona Golf Course.
The Mid-Prairie boys finished second in the eight team field with their combined score of 344. Mount Vernon won the championship with a 337. The Hawks put a pair in the top 10, led by a fourth place round of 82 for Drew Schlabaugh and a seventh place 84 for Grayson Gingerich. Following the tournament, they spoke with KCII Sports about their days.
Schlabaugh said, “Today was definitely a grind, but I think we played as well as we could. I birdied four the second time, stuck it real close. That was pretty cool.”
Gingerich added, “We were just trying to keep a low score, keep grinding. Hole six today, I birdied, so that got me going for the rest of the round.”
Other scores for Mid-Prairie included 88 for Denver Nelson, 90 for Bryce Henry, 95 for Clayton Davidson and 96 for Ace Peck.
The Highland Huskies did not post a team score. They were led by a ninth place finish for Colten Sypherd with an 85. He spoke after the meet with KCII Sports about his round.
Sypherd said, “I tried to par as many holes as I could. That was the goal to push myself towards today. First hole of the day I pared. So I tried to par right after that. Keep it going!”
Other scores for the Huskies included William Dunbar 111 and Isaac Giesmann 122. Mid-Prairie is back in action Thursday when they travel to Wahkonsa Country Club for another 18-hole Invite. Highland hosts Winfield-Mt. Union for a Superconference dual tonight at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort.
