The Washington Demon girls’ track and field team had another very successful day Tuesday at the Pen City Relays in Fort Madison. Washington finished second in team scoring in the Class A division with 120 points, just 22 behind the winners from Mount Pleasant.

The Demons were led by two individual champions. Iris Dahl picked up another win in the 800-meter run, posting a top time of two minutes 25 seconds. Fellow sophomore Ryen Pepper was the winner in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:10.

Washington also picked up a victory in the 4-by-800-meter relay, clocking in at 10:21. The Demons also finished second in the shuttle hurdles; fourth in the distance medley; fifth in the 4-by-200; and third in both the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400.

Pepper also had a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles, where sophomore teammate Leighton Messinger was runner-up. Messinger was also third in the 200 open, as were classmates Leighton Salazar in the long jump and Taylor Miksch in the discus toss.

Washington freshman Jaedyn Moore won the silver medal in the 200 and was fourth in the 100, while junior Quincy Griffis was fourth in the 3,000 and freshman Emma Horak was fifth in the 1,500 for the Demons.

The Washington boys came up with some solid efforts Tuesday while finishing fifth as a team at the Indian Relays in Wapello. That included two winners, as senior Alec Ulin was the champ in the 400 meters in 52.47 seconds and freshman Greyson Hartman was tops in the shot put by getting a top toss of 47 feet two-and-a-half inches.

Hartman also claimed a bronze medal in the discus, while junior teammate Keider Gomze-Valdez was fifth in the 100, as was fellow freshman Ethan Hotchkiss in the half-mile. The Demons also finished second in the 4-by-800; third in the 4-by-100; fourth in the shuttle hurdles; and fifth in the 4-by-400.

Winfield-Mount Union was nearly the top team at the Indian Relays, scoring 101 points and finishing runner-up to Mediapolis. Cam Buffington was a big part of the Wolves’ success, as the senior won the 100-meter dash in 11.38 seconds and had the top long jump leap of 21’4″.

Fellow senior Jake Edwards was a champion in the high jump by clearing 6’2″. WMU would also win the 4-by-400-meters in nearly three-and-a-half minutes flat and the distance medley in 3:38.

Sheaden Adams brought home a silver medal for Winfield-Mount Union in the 400, as did fellow junior Kohlby Newsom in the 800. Senior Cole Milks was third in the long jump for the Wolves, while sophomore teammate Bowen Thomson took fifth in the full mile for WMU, which also had a fifth-place finish in the sprint medley.

Columbus got a good day’s work from senior Russell Coil at Wapello, as he was the champion of the discus toss by hitting 141’8″ and was the runner-up of the shot put.

The Winfield-Mount Union girls produced two winners at the Pen City Relays. Senior Tessa Huston claimed the crown in the 400 hurdles in 1:12, while sophomore Quin Smith cleared five feet even to take the title in the high jump.

The Wolves also won the Class B division of the shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:15, and WMU would also finish fourth in the 4-by-100 and third in both the 4-by-200 and the sprint medley.

Highland also had a strong showing in Class B at Fort Madison. Makenzie Davis won the 100 hurdles for the Huskies in just over 18 seconds, while fellow sophomore Brenna Hazelett was third in the same race.

Highland freshman Alexa Hahn was fourth in the 100 and fifth in the long jump. The Huskies also finished third in the 4-by-100; fourth in the sprint medley; and fifth in the 4-by-200.
