The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams polished off their second doubleheader sweep this week, beating Cedar Valley Christian in Wellman Thursday. The Golden Hawk girls were a 2-1 winner. Elise Gingerich scored in the first five minutes of the match to give the Hawks the early lead. They would stay on top 1-0 going into the half. Out of the break, Mid-Prairie got an important insurance goal from Gingerich in the first 15 minutes, which would prove to be the game winner, as CVC broke up the shut out in the 68th minute to climb within 2-1. The Mid-Prairie defense was stout over the final 10 to secure the win. After the match, Gingerich spoke with KCII Sports about her night and the team’s victory.

Gingerich said, “It’s good to build that momentum early on. It can carry on throughout the game so it’s very important. (On my first goal) I took a touch around the goalie and finished with my left. (On my second goal) I knew I had a break-away and that I could build that momentum back up and finish. Finishing is important. Make sure it’s on goal. It helps out the team, which is what I care about most.”

She finished with both Golden Hawk goals. In goal, Niva Helmuth had nine saves to earn the win. As a team, the Golden Hawks had 13 total shots, nine on goal and four corners. The Golden Hawk girls are 4-1, winners of four straight and host Dyersville Beckman tonight. Cedar Valley Christian falls to 1-3.

In the nightcap, the Mid-Prairie boys scored a 2-0 shut out win. The Golden Hawks got a goal in each half, one from Beau Flynn and one from Peyton Fox with Jesse Stultz and Sawyer Hough recording assists. That was more than enough offense for the Mid-Prairie defense led by goalkeeper Joe Hall who turned in a clean sheet with 10 saves. He spoke with KCII sports after the win about his night in goal and the work of the Golden Hawk defense.

Hall said, “Early goals for us make me more confident. They mean that we’re working hard and we have to keep it up. Our defense locked it in and stepped it up. We continued to play hard. My favorite save tonight was probably the goal kick. The guy had an open shot and I just threw my hands up to the ball to keep it from going in the goal”

As a team, the Hawks had 10 shots, three on goal, and five corner kicks. The win is the third in a row for the boys who now stand at 4-2 with a contest in Wellman against Dyersville Beckman Friday. CVC is now 1-2.
