Both Washington Demon soccer teams earned victories over Fairfield last night, but the boys had to do it the hard way to preserve their undefeated start to the season. Washington fell behind 1-0 at halftime and trailed by two goals in the late stages of the match.

But the Demons would rally. Outside midfielder Angel Mata set up fellow senior Bill De La Rosa for a goal in the 62nd minute, and Mata would find senior forward Manny Raymundo two minutes later to tie the game.

The goal not only gave Raymundo a new career record for goals scored at Washington, but it would also be enough to eventually send the match to overtime. Two minutes into the extra period, a through ball from senior Randy Huertero made its way to Raymundo, who knocked in the “golden goal” to give the Demons a 3-2 win that pushed their record to 3-0 in conference play and 4-o overall.

The Washington girls would cruise to an 8-0 home win over Fairfield. Senior striker Giselle Marcelino had a goal in the opening minute; a second in the fifth minute; and a hat trick with 20 minutes left in the first half.

Marcelino would score again in the second half, as would sophomore Angie Anderson and seniors Audrey Anderson and CeCi Murphy. Angie Anderson and sophomore Maya Bruty picked up assists as the Demons improve to 1-2 in the Southeast Conference and 2-4 overall. Both Washington teams are back on the pitch Monday against conference rival Fort Madison.
