The Washington Demon girls’ track and field team put on a show yesterday at the annual Girls Rocket Relays in Eddyville. Washington was the team champion with 186 points, finishing over 60 points clear of second-place Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The Demons were led by six victories from individuals and relay teams. Two came from freshman Jaedyn Moore, who was the champion in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.28 seconds and took the title in the 200 meters by crossing the finish line in at 27.68 seconds. Moore was also fourth in the high jump.

Iris Dahl was a winner for Washington with the top time of five minutes 25 seconds in the 1,500 meters. Dahl also finished second place in the 400. Fellow sophomore Leighton Messinger claimed the crown in the 100-meter hurdles in just under 17 seconds while also finishing runner-up to Moore in the 100 and tied for third in the high jump.

The Demons’ 4-by-800-meter relay team brought home a win with a time of just under 10:56, while the shuttle hurdles team clocked in at 1:16 for a victory. Washington would go on to earn silver medals in the 4-by-100, 4-by-400 and the distance medley while also finishing third in the 4-by-200 and the sprint medley.

Junior Quincy Griffis was a runner-up for the Demons in the 3,000 meters, as was senior Ada Kendall in the 200. Kendall would also finish fifth in the 100, as would freshman Ellie Van Der Molen in the mile; sophomore Leighton Salazar in the long jump; sophomore Ryen Pepper in the 400 hurdles; and senior Sadie Van Der Molen in the discus toss.

Senior Abigail Kleese was fourth in the 800 for Washington, as was junior Eden Levetzow in the 400. The Demons also got bronze medals from junior Kendall Hinrichsen in the 400 hurdles; senior Taylor Bartholomew in the 400 open; junior Lauren Horak in the 800; senior Amelia Dahl in the mile; freshman Emma Horak in the half-mile; and sophomore Taylor Miksch in the discus.

The Washington boys also had a good showing at the Mount Pleasant Invitational yesterday. Senior Alec Ulin was a winner for the second time in the last week, crossing the finish line in nearly 53-and-a-half seconds to become champion of the 400-meter dash in the Class A division.

Junior Tyler Alderton was runner-up in Class A in the 3,200 meters for the Demons, while junior Mason Morgan finished fifth in the 110 hurdles. Washington had third-place finishes from junior Logan McDole in the 800, senior Kale Malichky in the mile and junior Jayfred Espinosa in the 200.

The Demons also won silver medals in the 4-by-400 and the distance medley while finishing third in the 4-by-200; fourth in the sprint medley; and fifth in the shuttle hurdles.

Winfield-Mount Union did some serious damage in the Class B division at Mount Pleasant with four winners. Cam Buffington was again the champ in the long jump by leaping 20 feet 10 inches, while fellow senior Gabe Hemsworth won the 400 hurdles in 55.63 seconds.

Wolves senior Ty Scorpil needed only 53.64 seconds to win the 400 open in Class B, while junior Kohbly Newsom was the 800-meter champion in just under 2:04. WMU senior Cole Milks was the runner-up to Buffington in the long jump, while junior Cooper Buffington was third in the discus.

WACO was led at Mount Pleasant by Louden Huisenga finishing tied for first in the high jump after he cleared five feet eight inches. Fellow junior Gage Samo and Clayton Miller finished fourth in the 400 hurdles and the long jump, respectively, while Warriors freshman Casey Coakley was fifth in the 400 hurdles and junior Isaac Rich was tied for fifth in the 100.

Like Washington, Sigourney also took part in the Girls’ Rocket Relays. Freshman Kia Montgomery was third in the 200 for the Savages, as was junior Josephine Moore in the shot put. Sophomore Addison Yates finished fourth in the half-mile for Sigourney, which also took third in the 4-by-800 and fifth in both the 4-by-100 and the distance medley.
