As part of a busy night in local high school boys’ soccer, the Columbus Wildcats earned their first victory of the season by knocking off the WACO Warriors. Despite junior Keiran Luitjens scoring for WACO, sophomore Sachiel Villagrana would find the back of the net for Columbus to get the match to overtime.

The game would stay tied at one through both overtime periods, leading to penalty kicks. Villagrana, senior Fernando Erazo, junior Bryan Tlatenchi and sophomore Gabe Zuniga buried their attempts to give the Wildcats a 4-2 edge in penalties and a win over the Warriors.

Columbus ends an 0-6 start to the season that included three losses in conference play, while WACO falls to 3-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 3-3 overall.

The Highland Huskies fell behind 5-0 by halftime last night at Mediapolis. Despite junior Jared Diaz scoring twice in the second half, Highland still ends up falling by a final score of 9-2. The Huskies drop their first Super Conference match of the season and drop to 3-3 overall. While Highland and WACO will meet in Wayland in their next matches Thursday, Columbus will travel to face Central Lee the same day.
