The Winfield-Mount Union boys’ track and field team brought home the title from this year’s Warrior Relays Monday at WACO High School in Wayland. The Wolves finished with 120 points and finished 15 points ahead of second-place Cardinal.
WMU was paced by four individual winners, including Sheaden Adams winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.1 seconds. Fellow junior Kohlby Newsom was the champion of the 800 meters by crossing the finish line in two minutes seven seconds.
Gabe Hemsworth needed only 57.17 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles for the Wolves, while fellow senior Cam Buffington leaped 22 feet five inches to take the title in the long jump.
Winfield-Mount Union’s relay teams were in top shape, as WMU picked up wins in the 4-by-400-meters in three minutes 42 seconds; the sprint medley in 1:39; and the distance medley in 3:47.
Wolves senior Ty Scorpil was second place to Hemsworth in the 400 hurdles and was the runner-up in the 110 hurdles. Senior Cole Milks finished third in the long jump for WMU, as did junior Cooper Buffington in the discus toss.
Senior Abram Edwards finished tied for fourth in the high jump, while sophomore Jaxton Jones and junior Jacob Nelson were fifth in the 400 and 800, respectively. Winfield-Mount Union also finished second in the 4-by-100 and fourth in the 4-by-800.
Despite finishing sixth in team scoring, WACO had a good showing in its home meet. Louden Huisenga was the champion of the high jump by clearing five feet eight inches, and the junior was part of the Warriors’ team that won the shuttle hurdles relay in 1:08.
WACO got the silver medal in the 4-by-200 and the bronze in the 4-by-100. The Warriors were also fourth in the sprint medley, the same finish Clayton Miller had for them in the long jump. Fellow WACO junior Gage Samo was fifth in the 400 hurdles.
Sigourney would end up fifth as a team, thanks in part to Troy Klett. The sophomore won the 3,200 meters in 11-and-a-half minutes and was the runner-up in the half mile.
Caden Clarahan won a title for the Savages in the 110 hurdles by clocking in at 16.17 seconds. The junior was also fifth in the shot put, as were sophomore teammates Colt Reed and Owen Menke in the 100 open and 110 hurdles, respectively. Sigourney also finished second in the shuttle hurdles and the distance medley.
Lone Tree’s ninth-place finish as a team included sophomore Grey Spillman tying for second in the high jump. The Lions were fifth in the 4-by-100 and third in both the 4-by-200 and the sprint medley.
