The Hillcrest Academy Raven boys soccer team added Cedar Valley Christian to their victim list Friday, beating the Huskies 5-0 in Kalona. The Ravens sprinted out of the gate to a 4-0 halftime lead, and added an insurance tally after intermission to finish the win. The Ravens got two goals from Rowan Miller, giving him a team leading eight this season, and one each from Micah Gerber, his seventh, one from Jesse Blossom his third and the first of the year for Mason Bender. Hillcrest helpers came from Seth Ours and Gerber with two each and one from Rowan Miller. Kyle Neuschwander posted a clean sheet with four saves, the fourth shutout for the Hillcrest defense this season. After the match, Raven scorer Jesse Blossom and defender Mason Helmuth joined KCII Sports to talk about the win.
Blossom said, “(Scoring early) was a gamechanger, definitely. As a six, we’re supposed to kick the ball back in if it goes out and it was just the perfect spot and perfect time (for my goal). The goal was wide open. The best thing we’ve been doing on offense this year is getting the ball out to our wings and connecting nice 1-2s.”
Helmuth continued, “I would say that after we saw the first goal go in, our whole team was more confident. We’re just all more comfortable when we’re up. I feel like we play harder because we want it more. As a defense, our goal is to create pressure on to the ball.”
As a team, the Ravens had 18 shots, eight on goal, and four corners. Hillcrest is still unbeaten at 6-0 this season with a trip to Wapello Tuesday. CVC is now 2-5.
