The Columbus Wildcat boys’ track and field team came away with the team championship at this year’s Savage Relays Tuesday in Sigourney. Columbus’ team score of 101 points was nine better than the second-place Winfield-Mount Union Wolves.

The Wildcats were led by two individual winners. Sophomore Alexander Rees was the champion of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.87 seconds, while senior Kaden Amigon won the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds.

Amigon was also second place in both the 200 meters and the long jump, while freshman teammate Lamar Ceant was the runner-up to Rees in the 110 hurdles. Columbus would pick up a win in the 4-by-100-meter relay in 44.12 seconds, as well as the sprint medley in one minute 41 seconds.

Senior Russell Coil was third in both the shot put and discus toss for the Wildcats, while junior Ty Muniz was fourth in the mile and fifth in the half mile. The ‘Cats were also second in the shuttle hurdles; third in the 4-by-800; and fourth in the 4-by-200.

As part of their runner-up finish as a team, Winfield-Mount Union won the distance medley relay by clocking in at 3:43. Gabe Hemsworth won the 400 hurdles in 55.71 seconds, while junior Sheaden Adams won the 400 open in 55.28 seconds.

Fellow senior Cam Buffington was the long jump champion with a top leap of 21 feet 10 inches. Buffington was also the silver medalist in the 100, as was Wolves junior Kohlby Newsom in the 800.

Cole Milks brought home the bronze in the long jump for WMU, while fellow senior Jake Edwards was fourth in the high jump and classmate Ty Scorpil was fifth in the 400 hurdles. Winfield-Mount Union took runner-up honors in the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 while also finishing third in the sprint medley

Sigourney finished 11th as a team at their home meet, led by junior Caden Clarahan finishing fourth in both the 110 hurdles and the shot put. Junior Jayden Thompson was also fourth in the discus for the Savages.

A trio of Sigourney sophomores were fifth in their events, including Troy Klett in the mile; Colt Reed in the 200; and Wyatt Wehr in the 400. The Savages’ relay team finished fourth in the shuttle hurdles.

WACO’s 10th-place finish in team scoring was paced by their victory in the 4-by-200, posting a top time of nearly 1:38. Senior Chase Waterhouse took second in the discus for the Warriors, while junior teammate Clayton Miller was fifth in the long jump. WACO also finished third in the shuttle hurdles and fifth in the 4-by-100.

The Keota Eagles snagged a bronze medal thanks to freshman Ayden Galindo’s efforts in the high jump. The top individual finish for the Highland Huskies belonged to junior Cayden Day, who was ninth in the 200.

The best finish by an area girls’ team at the Savage Relays was Winfield-Mount Union in sixth. Aurey Meeker was third in both the 100 and 200 for the Wolves, while fellow senior Tessa Huston took fourth in both hurdles races.

Sophomore Quin Smith finished tied for fourth in the high jump for WMU, which also placed second in the shuttle hurdles and third in the 4-by-100.

The WACO girls produced a winning relay in the shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:14. Freshman Carlee Lunsford was third in the 800 for the Warriors, while senior Zoey Denller was fifth in the 400 hurdles. WACO also finished fourth in the distance medley and fifth in the 4-by-100.

Columbus was led by junior Ariana Vergara’s bronze medal in the 100 hurdles, while sophomore teammate Isabel Rendon was fourth in the 400 open. Iris Garza was fifth in the 1500 for the Wildcats, as was fellow freshman Kymilla Bacon in the 200. Columbus also ended up third in the distance medley.

Sigourney was paced by third-place finishes for sophomore Addison Yates in the 3,000 and freshman Gwen Gatton in the 400. The Savages were also fifth in the 4-by-200 and fourth in both the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800.

Keota’s best finish belonged to sophomore Olivia Lyle, who was fourth in the 200. Junior Izzi Chalupa took fifth in the long jump for the Eagles, who were also fourth in the sprint medley.
