As part of a terrific track and field season, the Columbus Wildcat boys added a team victory in their home meet Monday. Columbus’ team score of 167 points was more than double that of second-place Wilton.
Five individual winners led the way for the Wildcats, including Kaden Amigon, who was a three-time champion. The senior won the 100-meter dash in 11.15 seconds and the 200 meters in just over double that time, and Amigon also leaped 20 feet seven-and-a-quarter inches to take the title in the long jump.
Ty Muniz won the mile run for Columbus with a time of 10 minutes 40 seconds and needed just under five minutes to also claim the crown in the half mile. The junior was also third in the 800.
Senior Russell Coil won the discus toss with a top throw of 131 feet seven inches and was second place in the shot put. Wildcat teammate Alexander Rees cleared five-and-a-half feet to win the high jump, and the sophomore was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Columbus freshman Cade Storm won the 110 hurdles in 1:05.
The ‘Cats also dominated the relay races, winning the 4-by-100-meters in 44.35 seconds; the 4-by-800 in 9:32; the sprint medley in 1:39; the distance medley in 4:12; and the shuttle hurdles in 1:07.
Cade Storm was a runner-up for Columbus in the 800, as was fellow senior Cael Phillips in the mile; sophomore Dakota Aney in the 400 hurdles; and freshman Lamar Ceant in the long jump. Ceant was also tied for second in the 110 hurdles.
Junior Riley Kaalberg took third place in the 100 for the Wildcats and was tied for third in the 200, while senior Damian Vergara and freshman Drake Marin were fourth in the 400 and 1,600, respectively.
Junior Markel Zapiensz was fifth in the shot put, as was freshman teammate Fritz Figaro in the discus, while Columbus also won bronze medals in the 4-by-200 and 4-by-400.
The Lone Tree girls were second place as a team at Columbus Junction, finishing just under 30 points back of team champion Durant. Sophomore Ava Christofferson won the 100-meter dash for the Lions in nearly 13 seconds flat, while junior Rylee Shield was the champion of the 200 meets in just under 28 seconds.
Lone Tree racked up the victories in the relays, as the Lions won the 4-by-100 in 52.22 seconds; the sprint medley in one minute 56 seconds; the 4-by-200 in 1:51; and the 4-by-800 in 11:26
Hayden Yoder won the shot put for Lone Tree with a top toss of 32 feet one-and-a-half inches while also taking fourth in the discus. Fellow junior Cate Sexton was a runner-up in the 400 hurdles and also won bronze in the long jump, as did freshman teammate Olivia Magruder in the 400 open and junior Alex Dautremont in the discus.
Freshman Addison McCullough was fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100 for the Lions, while sophomore Jazmine Nino also finished fourth in the 800. Lone Tree was also fourth in the 4-by-400.
The Columbus girls finished tied for third in team scoring at their home meet and had three total victories. Sophomore Isabel Rendon needed just 2:52 to win the 800, while freshman Iris Garza clocked in at 5:28 to claim the crown in the 1,500 and the Wildcats’ distance medley team had a winning time of 4:47.
Kymila Bacon took silver in the 200 for Columbus, as did fellow freshman Bella Forbes in the shot put and the discus. Junior teammate Ariana Vergara was also second in the 100 hurdles, while freshman Ellie Sanders was fifth in the same race.
Sophomore Naveiah Garza was fourth in the high jump for the Wildcats, as was freshman Rozlynn Garza in the 400. Columbus also finished second in the 4-by-400 and fourth in the 4-by-200.
The best individual finish for the Lone Tree boys came from sophomore Grey Spillman, who was second in the high jump. Freshman Brock Nebergall was third in the half mile for the Lions, who were also the runner-up in the 4-by-100 and 4-by-800 but had the winning time of 1:36 in the 4-by-200.
