Monday featured plenty of fireworks on the oval in Riverside for KCII area schools as the Highland Huskies hosted their Senior Night track meet. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk, WACO Warrior and home Huskies boys and girls teams all showcased their talents on the local stage. The Mid-Prairie boys won the team title by a half point over the Keokuk Chiefs 120 to 119.5.

The Golden Hawks had five event championships including Kaden Kos in the shot put with a throw of 42’7″, Josh Turner in high jump clearing six feet, Emmett Swartzentruber in the mile at 4:32.54, a new meet record, and Jayden Stafford in the wheelchair 100 and 800s in times of 18.28 seconds and 2:19.21 respectively. Other top finishes for the Mid-Prairie boys included Kos runner-up in discus, Landon Sullivan runner-up in long jump, second for Max Swartzentruber in the two mile, Jayse Yoder second in the 200 and 400, second for the sprint medley team of Dallin Sullivan, Gentry Bontrager, Cobi Hershberger and Nolan Jergens, Emmett Swartzentruber third in the 800, third for the 4×800 of Thomas Flynn, Emmett Swartzentruber, Preston Yutzy and Jacob Donaldson, third for the 4×1 with Landon Sullivan, Dallin Sullivan, Bontrager and Hershberger, and third for the 4×4 with Yoder, Jergens, Carson Humphrey and Max Kipp.

The WACO boys had the next best area finish, placing sixth with 37 points. The Warriors got a championship from Chase Waterhouse in the discus throwing 151’10”. Other top WACO finishes included runner-up for the Warrior shuttle hurdle team of Louden Huisenga, Casey Coakley, Bryson Waterhouse and Clayton Miller, third for Miller in long jump, and third for Huisenga in high jump.

Highland scored six points. Scoring events for the Huskies included Caden Day fourth in the 200, a sixth place finish in the sprint medley with Jackson Robinson, Brixton Rust, Jackson Schneider and Elvin Hernandez, and Schneider sixth in the 110 hurdles.

The Mid-Prairie girls ran away from the rest of the field, taking the team title with 168 points, beating second place Tipton’s 134. The Hawks had seven event championships including Jovi Evans taking the 100 in 12.86 seconds and the 200 in 26.03 seconds, Paige Safly winning high jump clearing 5’2″, Abby Fleming beating the field in the 3000 in 10:54.76, Phoebe Shetler was the 1500 winner in 5:15.44, a win for the 4×800 with Annika Poll, Rebekah Wallington, Averi Janecek, and Shetler, and a shuttle hurdle title for Sophie Miller, Olivia Schlabach, Nora Pennington and Myli Hershberger. Other top Mid-Prairie finishes included Harper Pacha second in shot put and third in discus. Brooklyn Stutzman second in the 3000, Olivia Schlabach second in the 100 hurdles, runner-up for Greta Sieren in the 800, Dessa Poll second place in the 400 hurdles, second for the sprint med with Dakota Mitchell, Hershberger, Laurin Fay and Sieren, runner-up for the 4×1 with Mitchell, Hershberger, Safly and Evans, Pennington third in long jump, and third for the 4×200 with Mitchell, Safly, Lanee Duwa and Fay.

The Highland girls were sixth of seven teams with 37 points. Top finishes for the Huskies included runner-up for the 4×200 team of Alexa Hahn, Hailey Brun, Lilly Barre and Grace Prybil, Prybil third in the 100, and third for Mackenzie Davis in the 100 hurdles.

The WACO girls were seventh with 34 points. Top finishes for the Warriors included runner-up for the shuttle hurdle team of Ally Rinner, Brenna Graber, Madelyn Farmer and Zoey Dennler, third for Dennler in the 400 hurdles, and third for the distance medley of Peyton Graber, Dennler, Elyssa Graber and Carlee Lunsford.

As part of the night’s festivities Highland honored senior athletes Sarah Burton, Courtney Chalupa, Grace Prybil, and Jackson Schneider.
