According to the U.S. Drought Mitigation Center, significant rainfall over the last month has tremendously improved conditions in the KCII listening area, as well as the rest of the State.
At the start of 2024, nearly 70% of the listening area was classified as extreme drought, the second highest level on the intensity scale. As of this week, that number is down to 1%, with the only extreme drought found in the northwest corner of Iowa County. Severe drought, one level below extreme, is only present in Iowa and Johnson counties.
To the south, a majority of area counties are no longer facing drought conditions, rather they are classified as abnormally dry or better. This includes Washington, Keokuk, Jefferson, Henry, and Louisa counties.
