Both Columbus soccer teams were able to go on the road last night and win at Wapello. The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls got things started when Abby Acosta scored a goal off a perfectly placed corner kick by fellow senior Lecet Quiroz to give the Wildcats a halftime lead.
Quiroz would strike in the second half on a through-ball down the middle of the pitch from senior Samarah Garza to secure a 2-0 win for Columbus/WMU. The ‘Cats are now 2-7 this season, including a 2-2 record in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
The Columbus boys dominated to the tune of an 8-0 victory over Wapello. Senior Fernando Erazo and sophomore Sachiel Villagrana were electric, scoring four goals each to help the Wildcats win for the third time in the last four matches.
The ‘Cats are now 3-4 in the Super Conference and 3-7 overall. The Columbus boys are back in action later today when they take on Danville in the quarterfinals of this year’s Super Conference Tournament, while the Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls also play later today against Central Lee.
