The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls’ soccer team came away with a 2-0 victory at Central Lee last night. Senior Abby Acosta gave the Wildcats a halftime lead after a goal that was assisted by sophomore Ariana Navarro, then senior Lecet Quiroz buried a free kick from nearly 40 yards out to sew up a second victory in as many days.

Columbus/WMU improves to 3-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 3-7 overall. Both the Columbus Wildcat and WACO Warrior boys would not be as fortunate, suffering losses yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Super Conference Tournament.

WACO fell behind to Burlington Notre Dame last night in Kalona but were able to equalize thanks to a second-half goal from junior Keiran Luitjens. Unfortunately, the Warriors would see the Nikes go back in front late and eventually hold on for the 2-1 win. WACO’s record falls to 5-7.

Columbus fell behind 3-0 by halftime at Danville yesterday. Despite sophomore Sachiel Villagrana scoring twice in the second half, the Wildcats would ultimately fall by a final of 8-2, dropping their record to 3-8.
