The Washington Demons start their boys’ golf postseason journey today when they play in the Class 3A Sectional 5 tournament at Mount Pleasant Golf & Country Club, hoping that it will not only carry with it a second straight team sectional championship, but also move Washington one step closer to the state tournament.

The Demons have been dominant this season, winning eight of the 11 events that they have played in and claiming every conference meet this season. It’s no surprise that chief among the reasons for that dominance has been senior Roman Roth.

The defending Class 3A state champion has been a winner of six events in 2024, including the two-day Dutch Masters in Pella and a second straight Southeast Conference Tournament. Roth has gone as low as 67 strokes across 18 holes this spring and is posting an average score of just over 71.

Sophomores Rajan Roth and Drew Conrad have also been stellar for Washington on their way to all-conference status. Roth was the winner of the Washington Invitational and is averaging a score of 74-and-a-half per 18 holes, while Conrad has averaged just over 77 strokes in 18-hole tournaments.

Sophomore Carson Brown and seniors Luke Beenblossom and Teague Mayer all also earned all-conference honors and are shooting 90 or lower on average in 18-hole events.

The Demons have advanced to Class 3A districts in each of the last two seasons and look for a Monday trip to Williamsburg this year if they can finish top two at Mount Pleasant today. The Washington girls’ team also plays today in this year’s Southeast Conference Tournament at Elks Fairview Golf Course in Keokuk.
