The high school soccer playoffs get underway Tuesday with a pair of local girls’ teams colliding for a spot in the regional semifinals. The Washington Demons meet the Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union Wildcats in Class 1A Region 8 with the season on the line, and both teams come into today’s match on a roll.
Washington has just a 6-8 overall record but has won four of its last five matches. Senior Audrey Anderson has scored a team-high eight goals for the Demons, while sophomore Angeline Anderson has been a strong offensive force with seven goals and five assists and senior Giselle Marcelino has piled up six goals of her own.
Columbus/WMU has gone 3-7 this season but is riding the momentum of back-to-back wins coming. Lecet Quiroz leads the Wildcats with seven goals and two assists, while fellow senior Abby Acosta has also scored three times.
Washington has won the last three meetings with Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, including a 2-0 victory last season. Kickoff between the Demons and the Wildcats in the first round of the Class 1A Region 8 playoffs is set for Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 at Iowa City High School.
