The Washington Demons kept their girls’ soccer season alive by knocking off Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union last night 1-0 in the first round of the Class 1A Region 8 playoffs. The match was a scoreless draw after one half in Iowa City, with neither side getting many shots off.

But, in the 50th minute, Washington sophomore Angeline Anderson stepped up to take a free kick from 20 yards out, and her ensuing strike would slip through the legs of the Columbus/WMU goalkeeper for what would prove to be the winning tally.

Demons head coach Mason Quigley told KCII Sports after the game that his team handled moving to a different facility and a different playing surface well.

“When you go and you prepare for grass one night,” Quigley said, “and then the rain changes it to turf on the next night, it’s always tough to adjust to that, but I think the girls came out and they adjusted well. We were able to continue offensively the whole night and apply that pressure, so that I thought that they came out ready to go and played well.”

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union has their season end with a record of 3-8. The Wildcats will be saying goodbye to five seniors, including Lecet Quiroz, Abby Acosta, Alynna Leos, Ariana Navarro-Ayala, Samarah Garza and Ximena Heredia.

Meanwhile, with the victory, Washington wins its fifth of the last six matches to improve to 7-8. The Demons will now face Center Point-Urbana later tonight in the Region 8 quarterfinals.
