A trip to the state tournament is on the line as local high school girls’ golfers take on the Class 1A Region 5 finals today at The Preserve Golf Club at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia.

Among that group is the Highland Huskies, who will be looking for their 10th team victory of the seasons out of 11 events played. Highland added to its first Southeast Iowa Super Conference championship in program history by winning the 1A Region 5C tournament last week in Sigourney, their first-ever regional title.

Senior Kelsi Cerny and sophomore Adisyn Prottsman each shot a season-low, 14-over-par round of 86 for the Huskies to tie for meet medalist honors last week. Cerny is look for a second straight trip to state, having posted an average 18-hole score of over 95 strokes this season.

Both Prottsman and junior Danika Kraus have the lowest total scores of the spring for Highland, while sophomore Emersyn Schultz joins her teammates in shooting on average under 100 in 18-hole competition. Senior Haley Sands and junior Adeline Krotz will also look to help the Huskies reach state for the first time in over a decade.

Sigourney senior Emma Hammes will also look to punch her ticket to state after she shot a 96 last week and finished tied for fourth in Region 5C. Hammes has gone as low as 95 while leading the Savages in scoring and averaging a round of 107 per 18 holes. The Class 1A Region 5 finals tee off this morning at 10.
