The 2024 National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week is May 12-18th. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Washington County Sheriff Chief Deputy Shawn Ellingson had this to say on the week, “This week is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, so, we appreciate all of our guys and all that they do, and we thank everybody for all of the thanks we have gotten this week.” National Law Enforcement Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.
