The Sigourney Savages started conference play in both baseball and softball with victories last night at Belle Plaine. Sigourney softball was a winner by a final of 13-0 in five innings, while Savage baseball edged out the Plainsmen 3-0.

Fresh off the announcement of their preseason number-two ranking in the state in Class 1A, Sigourney softball lived up to the billing, scoring four runs in the first inning and using seven runs across the final two frames to end the game early.

All-state senior pitcher Carly Goodwin was her normal dazzling self in the circle, allowing just one hit and piling up 14 strikeouts to help the Savages start the 2024 season with a win.

Meanwhile, Sigourney baseball survived a low-scoring affair to not only win their South Iowa Cedar League opener but also push their early overall mark to 2-0. Both Savage squads are back in action again tonight, with softball traveling to West Liberty and baseball hosting Martensdale-St Marys.
