The 2024 season ended abruptly for some of the best local high school golfers. Inclement weather led the Iowa High School Athletic Association to cancel the second round of the Class 1A and 3A state championships yesterday in Ames, meaning the Washington Demons, Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Keota Eagles played only 18 holes instead of the planned 36.

Washington would wind up fifth as a team at the Class 3A tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, posting a total score of 321 strokes that was only 17 more than eventual champion ADM.

Demon senior Roman Roth nearly finished his career with back-to-back individual state championships, but his one-under-par round of 71 on Monday would leave him five strokes back of the lead.

Roth tied for the tournament high with seven birdies and also had four bogeys on his way to finishing tied for third, becoming only the 16th player in IAHSAA history to win multiple state medals.

Luke Beenblossom had Washington’s second-best score by shooting a 10-over 82, while fellow senior Teague Mayer fired an 89 and sophomores Drew Conrad, Rajan Roth and Carson Brown had Monday rounds of 83, 85 and 90, respectively.

Winfield-Mount Union and Keota would end up tied for sixth in the 1A team standings, each posting a combined score of 334 strokes at Ames Golf & Country Club.

The Wolves’ Carter Loyd had the top individual round, finishing tied for 15th by shooting an eight-over 79 that was 10 strokes out of first place but just four strokes away from earning the senior a medal.

Cody Milks found himself in the top 20 by posting an 81 for WMU, while fellow freshman Justin Knipfer was only stroke behind him. Konner Kinneberg carded an 88 for the Wolves, with fellow sophomores Grant Anderson and Max Edwards shooting 95 and 96, respectively.

Junior Billie Kindred had the top round Monday for Keota with an 11-over 82, earning him a spot on the overall top 25. Senior Cole Kindred fired an 83 for the Eagles, while freshman Brennan McGuire had an 84; senior Sawyer Stout shot an 85; senior Tanner Waterhouse carded an 88; and senior Conner Strand posted a 93.
