The Mid-Prairie baseball and softball teams are on the diamond tonight to wrap up the week of competition. The Golden Hawk softball team opened the year Thursday at No. 3 in Class 2A Iowa City Regina, falling by an 8-5 score. The Hawks had six hits in the game and led in the middle innings, but couldn’t overcome four errors and timely Regal hitting. The Golden Hawks were led by two hits for Kyla Karnes, two RBI for Kadence Grout and two runs scored for Izzy Kite. Grout did the work in the circle, throwing six frames, giving up nine hits, eight runs, four earned and punching out three.

Mid-Prairie’s opponent tonight is Mount Pleasant who comes in with an 0-1 record after a 14-4 Wednesday loss to Central Lee. Against the Hawks, the Panthers were out hit 14 to 9, and trailed 13-0 before getting on the board in the middle innings. Keagyn Coleman led the Panthers with three RBI, Emma Starr and Abigail Shelangoski each had two hits for the Mount Pleasant offense. In the circle, Tyi Alter took the loss, going two and two thirds innings. The Golden Hawks have won two of the last three in the series, including a 10-0 win in six innings last year where Dakota Mitchell, Brenna Jehle, Sophie Miller and Sydney Knebel each had two hits with Miller and Knebel each driving in two, while Knebel got the complete game, three hit win, recording nine Ks. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Carr, Vincent, Gould Field in Kalona.

The Golden Hawk boys are also looking for a bounce back as they jump on the bus for Williamsburg tonight. The Hawks suffered their first setback of the year Thursday at home against Class 4A Ottumwa, dropping an 8-5 decision. Mid-Prairie collected eight hits and drew five walks, but couldn’t overcome four errors. Brady Weber and Dylan Henry led at the plate with two hits each, Henry had an RBI and Tatem Telfer drove in a couple. Weber, Bowen Burmeister, Brock Harland, Landry Gingerich and Luke Traetow all scored once. Telfer took the loss on the mound in three and a third, walking and striking out seven each. Mid-Prairie is 4-1 this year, ranked No. 6 in the first Class 2A poll of the season by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Hawks are hitting .320 as a group with a .471OBP and .426 slug with 41 runs scored on 39 hits. As a pitching staff they have a 1.53 collective ERA with a .161 opponent batting average, 19 hits allowed and 46 strikeouts. Individual leaders include, Weber at .533 with eight hits, Telfer has eight RBI and a .938 slug. On the mound, Harland, Burmeister, Telfer and Carson Pence all have pitching wins.

Williamsburg is 3-2 this year after sweeping Vinton-Shellsburg last night 5-3 and 5-4 in a WAMAC Doubleheader. This year the Raiders are hitting .309 as a team with a .380 on base percentage and .395 slug with 13 runs on 25 hits. As a pitching staff they have a combined 3.75 ERA with a .229 opponent batting average with 24 strikeouts and 24 hits allowed. Individual leaders include, Cael Moore hitting .500 with five hits and four RBI. Nile Sinn has scored three runs. On the mound, Sinn has a 2.03 ERA in 10 innings with a .232 opponent average. Mid-Prairie has beaten Williamsburg five times in a row including 7-3 a season ago when both teams were ranked in the top six of Class 2A.
